Our seminar and workshop will start by trying to understand ‘what digital pedagogy is not’, expanding from there to try to understand what its futures might be. In the talk, we will propose that digital pedagogy – and digital education more broadly – is more than just pandemic emergency teaching, AI-driven automation or tips and tricks for the ‘enhancement’ of student experience. We will argue that it is a space of hope, in which teachers can craft preferable futures for the practices and structures of education itself.
Drawing on our own research in the co-design of preferable futures for education, our seminar will describe some of the dominant imaginaries currently shaping digital pedagogy, explore alternatives and present examples of new kinds of futures for higher education that are currently emergent.
In the workshop which follows, participants will work with a set of speculative scenarios we have developed as a basis for defining what we want our own futures for digital pedagogy to look like
Professor Sian Bayne directs the Centre for Research in Digital Education and is also Director of Education at the Edinburgh Futures Institute. Professor Bayne researches higher education futures, interdisciplinary approaches to researching digital education and digital pedagogy.
Dr Michael Gallagher researches the mobilities exhibited by groups and sectors in flux, such as refugees, internally displaced persons, and nomadic groups, and how technology is used to both structure and manage these mobilities. He works routinely with universities in Tanzania, Uganda, and Nigeria on digital education, sits on the Future University Lab of Una Europa, and is the Programme Director of the MSc in Digital Education.
