Professor Siân Bayne, University of Edinburgh directs the Centre for Research in Digital Education, at the Moray House School of Education, University of Edinburgh. She is also Director of Education at the Edinburgh Futures Institute and Assistant Principal Education Futures for the university.
Presentation and Workshop
This session will focus on speculative methods, and how university communities might come together to imagine preferable futures for higher education. Professor Bayne will start by introducing her recent work on participative and speculative design for the future of digital education within universities, using two concrete examples from the University of Edinburgh. These will illustrate how focused, participative visioning work across the university community (in this case through the Near Future Teaching project) can be used to inform a large-scale, strategic project – in this case the Edinburgh Futures Institute – which centers the practices, aspirations and work of staff and students.
We will then work together on some ‘hands-on’ speculation, using a set of recent scenarios and micro-fictions developed at Edinburgh, which aim to help university communities conceive and define new futures.
Drinks & buffet reception with continued discussion, exploration of methods/tool-kit and networking.
